What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray polyurethane foam insulation (SPF) is a type of insulation that provides the highest R-value per inch compared to other commonly used insulation products. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

Spray foam insulation is applied as a liquid which then expands. This allows the foam to fill small gaps and tight crevices that other insulation products, such as fiberglass, cannot fill.

American Spray Foam offers two types of spray foam products; open-cell and closed-cell. See below for more information:

Open-cell and Closed-cell Spray Foam

Open-cell:

Open-cell spray foam is applied using a water-based blowing agent and expands up to 100 times the original volume. As the foam expands rapidly, the cells break apart and fill with air. This creates a low-density flexible insulation that fills in even the smallest gaps and tightest spaces.

Recommended insulation: stud walls, floors or attics.

Closed-cell:

Closed-cell spray foam is applied using high R-value blowing agents and expands up to 40-50 times the original volume. The cells remain tightly packed, creating strong insulation, which increases overall structural integrity. Closed-cell spray foam also resists water vapor and air infiltration.

Recommended insulation: basement, outbuilding or crawlspace.
